Weight-loss Unit (Specialty V)

img The advantages of the gastric balloon as compared to other weight-loss techniques are many, as it is approached at the Centro Sanitario Virgen del Pilar. Each case is studied in detail by a team of endoscopists, surgeons and anesthetists, together with psychologists and nutritionists.

img The gastric balloon method is the least invasive method for treating the problem of obesity. The intervention is conducted endoscopically, with the patient under anesthesia. A balloon is introduced into the stomach to reduce its useful space and provide a feeling of fullness that helps to regulate the intake of food.

The intervention lasts close to an hour; however, follow up is a 6-month process. First, a psychological profile of the patient is drawn up, in which motivation is an essential factor. During this time the nutritionist will design a balanced personalized diet, based on a Mediterranean diet to modify the patient’s behavior regarding food and thus prevent excess weight being put back on once the balloon is removed.

img Every case is different, but the objective is to ensure that patients achieve an optimal body mass index to ensure a better quality of life. It goes without saying that this also reduces the risk of other serious illnesses associated with excess weight such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
