The Reproduction Unit of the Department of Gynecology at the Centro Sanitario Virgen del Pilar was created in 1999, as part of a structure that has been providing medical attention to women since 1947.
Since the Unit’s creation, it has over time broadened its portfolio of services. We began with diagnosis of the infertile couple, artificial insemination by husband or donor, and in vitro fertilization, after which we quickly added sperm microinjection to our routine techniques.
We currently operate the largest and most active oocyte donation program in our area. This program allows us not only to satisfy the demand of our patients, but also to export ova to Madrid, Bilbao, Pamplona, Zaragoza o La Rioja.
We also provide services to serodiscordant couples that suffer from infections such as hepatitis or HIV. To this end, we have the only laboratory accredited by the Basque government in the province of Gipuzkoa to handle specimens from individuals in this situation, with specific biological security areas to avoid contagion or infection. Furthermore, we offer complementary techniques such as Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) that has allowed for a notable increase in the success rate of human reproduction.
We also offer the possibility of sperm cryopreservation for patients whose future fertility may be affected.
Our ambition is to walk hand-in-hand with our patients down the long road toward overcoming infertility, and to be, at the very least, a close and supportive presence.
